Why is winter as exciting as summer - or maybe even more so - for Sam?

Sam thinks winter is as exciting as summer or maybe even more so. The birds are magnificent and almost tame. They talk to one another and warn one another. They also fight over food, kingship, and the right to make the most noise. Sam enjoys watching the antics of the chickadees.
