How did Sam get a deer in "How a Door Came to Me"?

A hunter shot a deer. The deer stumbled and fell in Sam's meadow. Sam dragged the deer into the woods and covered it with hemlock boughs. When the hunter came looking for it. The man could not find it, so Sam had his deer.
