Why do you think the man, who has been watching Gerry, gives him his tame black-backed gull to take home?

In my opinion, Kosti saw that Gerry was enamored of the bird and gave it to him as a token of friendship. After all, he's an escaped convict.... who knows what will happen to Kosti down the road.
