Who is Jim's fellow passenger on the train in Ch 1 of My Antonia?

Why is it assumed that Antonia's father committed suicide rather than having been axed and then shot to make it appear as suicide?

Jim's fellow passenger on the train (in the novel, My Antonia) IS Antonia. They must both come to terms living in a place that threatens to 'erase' them.
