When Victor orders an independent lab to verify all of Hurst's work (Hurst has falsified data and published invalid scientific papers), Hurst sees Victor's actions as a personal affront intended to damage his professional reputation. In response, Hurst threatens to ruin Victor's reputation, insinuating that he knows about Victor's darker experiments.
