The language used throughout the book is consistently artless, at times to the point of occasionally seeming amateurish. There is a certain roughness in phrasing, a certain messiness in sentence and paragraph structure, a certain clumsiness in development of metaphor that on one level might be seen as unsophisticated and a bit crude.
