The one event that most clearly symbolizes the fear that the Quraysh feel toward Muhammad and his followers occurs when Muhammad goes on a pilgrimage to Mecca after the truce. The Quraysh do not remain in town, but rather, retreat to the hills around Mecca. They are afraid of staying in Mecca while Muhammad and his followers are there, and seek shelter in an area where they believe themselves to be safe. The Quraysh only return to Mecca after Muhammad's departure.
