Why does Berkmann say Erin died?

Berkmann states on the recording he made for Harper that he is not concerned that Harper will share the tape with the authorities because he has too much to lose. Berkmann says on tape that he knows he is Holly's father. He also makes other comments that make Harper believe he must have a tape of the conversation between Harper and Dr. Lenz about Harper's affair with Erin.
