How did Theodore, Sr. become involved in the politics in New York?

Political reform and the Roosevelt name had been linked for some time already. Theodore joined the Republican Reform Club and the club soon looked to him for leadership. Part of Theodore's motivation in getting involved was his dislike of some politicians.
