Mittie, her sister, and her mother supported the South. They had family members fighting for the Confederacy. They sewed shirts and other items that were secretly shipped to the South. Theodore and his family were Northerners. They believed in the effort and Theodore worked to help Northern soldiers. When Mittie's mother decided that she needed to go south to see her son Daniel, Theodore pulled strings in order to make it happen.
