A variety of methods were used in the nineteenth century. These include making the person violently ill or giving ipecac. Children might also be plunged into cold baths and given things like whiskey, gin, or hemp. The Roosevelts used ipecac with Teedie as well as having him drink coffee and smoke cigars.
