A recurring idea is rejection. One of the more minor themes of the novel is rejection. Both Bond and Drax face rejection in the story but they deal with it very differently. Drax is rejected by his peers while in grade school in England. He looks differently and has a long German name. As children do, they tease him and make fun. This shapes his whole life. When he grows old, he takes out his bitterness towards his old schoolmates as a hatred for the whole of England.
