What is Tom's view of the war, as the reader learns in Chapter 8?

Tom's view of the war is that it has received extremely good press. The war is painted as a series of idyllic and heroic exploits, but in reality, it is exhaustion, exhilaration, boredom and discomfort in rapid succession.
