What is ironic about the hippos Claudia and Tom see in the Cairo Zoo?

The irony of the hippos that Claudia and Tom see in the Cairo Zoo is that they eat better than most of the people in Cairo. The hippos were fed potatoes. That would have been a luxury for the citizens of the town.
