Discuss the language soldiers used to describe war events. Why did they choose this language?

In Cairo during World War II, the soldiers chose banal language to disguise their horror. They called bombs Matildas and Honeys. They spoke of them "brewing up." Soldiers made light of the situations in order to mentally cope with them.
