David suspects his uncle's guilt for much of the novel. When he pulled out the gun and aimed it at his uncle, David knew it was empty but he also considered the consequences of killing his uncle. David doubted his ability to hit and kill his uncle. He also thought about what added problemes killing his uncle would cause his family. Also David questioned what he would be solving even if he did manage to kill his uncle.
