Baseball is often seen as the quintessential American game. The protagonist watches it and the game doesn't seem real. It seems surreal much like the American Dream. The American dream is supposed to include people like the protagonist, but it does not: it only pretends to. The protagonist is black so his participation in the American Dream feels simulated much like the game he is watching.
