Queequeg is such a fierce and fearless harpooner that captains Peleg and Bildad allow Queequeg to sign aboard the Pequod with no papers to prove he has been converted to Christianity. The men see Queequeg as a cannibal savage. Queequeg however resists Christianity reasoning that Christians are just as savage and unhappy as pagans.
