Ishmael is the protagonist of the story and our narrator. He is a reliable narrator who is able to give the reader a sense of direction and understanding about the themes and characters of the book. Like many characters in the book, his name is an allusion to the Bible. Ishmael is a Biblical name associated with orphans and outcasts.
