Captain Bildad is another character whose name is an allusion to the Bible. There is a Beldad who comforts Job in his misery. In Moby Dick, Bildad is part owner of the Pequod. Like Peleg, he is also a wealthy retired whaleman. Bildad seems pragmatic and not prone to empathy. This can also be seen in the Bildad of the Bible who was considered the least understanding of the three friends that visited Job.
