What makes Grampa cry when he’s talking to Hiram in the beginning of chapter 7

Hiram drives Grampa out to the Hillburn fields in Chapter 7. Grampa feels sorry for himself briefly as he cannot move the way he used to and he also reminisces about the relationship between himself and Harlan. Grampa begins to cry at this, making Hiram uncomfortable.
