Mission to Kala is unusual for a novel concerned with the impact of colonialism on Africans: not a single European appears as a major character. Indeed, the only European in the book is a surly Greek bus driver who appears for less than a page. Nevertheless, the novel is deeply concerned with the colonial presence, and its plot cannot be understood without some awareness of Cameroons colonial history.
