She was a widow: her husband had died very young, and she had come back to live with the family again.
I am convinced today that Aunt Amou had a personal obsession about all this because she had never managed to conceive herself, and now it looked as though she would never have a child at all - not only because her husband was dead, but through her own sterility.
Aunt Amou stood up to Niam and backed his desire not to be the one to seek out Niam's wife.
