Mission to Kala addressed colonial education and its effects on the Cameroonians. Whereas the German promoted a general education, the learning of the German language, and an emphasis on agriculture, their main goal was the educate the people in order to allow them governance over their own colony.
When the colony was annexed, the French, for the most part, allowed the mission school structure to continue. They were, however, also focused on assimilation and creating government controlled schools and curriculum modeled after their own structure. The Cameroonians embraced education, unfortunately, only a handful were had access, something that ironically denied success to the majority to which the education was, in fact, unavailable.
