The title of the story "Scheherazade" refers to Queen Scheherazade, a character in the collection of Arabian folk tales called One Thousand and One Nights or sometimes referred to as the Arabian Nights. In the story, the king is jilted by a woman and vows to get vengeance against all women. He then takes one wife each day and has her beheaded the following morning so that she will not have a chance to be unfaithful. Queen Scheherazade is the one to break the bloody routine, since she preserves her own life by telling the king a story each night, but stopping every night at a climactic point in the story. In this way, she ensures that the king will keep her alive.
