The text states clearly that Kafuku had adored his wife, having fallen deeply in love with her the moment they met. Kafuku had been 29 then and the narrator states that Kafuku's undying devotion to his wife had remained unchanged in all the years until her death, when he had been 49. He had never slept with anyone besides his wife in all those years. However, she had been unfaithful to Kafuku. The narrator states that Kafuku's wife had had four affairs in total, three of which had been with leading men in films in which she co-starred.
