Whose clothing does the old man resort to wearing once his belongings are destroyed by the tsunami and what is the significance of this development?

The narrator mentions offhandedly in Chapter 24 that since the old man's belongings were all destroyed by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami, he is now wearing her late father's clothing.
