The narrator mentions offhandedly in Chapter 24 that since the old man's belongings were all destroyed by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami, he is now wearing her late father's clothing. The old man is such a supportive and loving father figure to the narrator that Ogawa's placement of the old man into the narrator's father's clothing is clearly meant to symbolize that bond that has always existed between them, even before the death of the narrator's father.
