While the narrator is running errands for her boss at spice company where she works as a typist, she sees a convoy of Memory Police trucks. In the gap between the canvas canopy and the truck bed, she catches a glimpse of objects she wishes she had never seen. The reason for her horror is that she has seen "the small sky-blue hand-knit pair" of gloves "with a strand of chain stitching to hold them together" (206). The narrator is devastated by the sight, since she knows that it means that the Inuis have bee captured by the Memory Police.
