As the Memory Police are searching the narrator's house, she and the old man are terrified, but they know that they must remain calm and allow the house to be searched thoroughly. Suddenly, one of the officers notices the pile of dirty dishes in the sink. Thinking quickly, the narrator claims that she cooks many meals at once and freezes them, which placates the officer enough for him to move on to a different area of the house.
