What new job does the narrator take in Chapter 20 and why?

Once novels have been disappeared, the narrator obviously cannot carry on her work as a novelist. The old man assures her that a new job will be found for her shortly and indeed, one day she is asked to report to her new position as a typist at a company that produces spices.
