To what location do the old man and the narrator travel in Chapter 23 and for what purpose?

At the beginning of Chapter 23, the narrator and the old man are taking a train to an area an hour's walk from the narrator's mother's cabin. They have decided to go there in hopes that the narrator's mother had hidden her sculptures (with disappeared objects contained within them) somewhere in the old cabin.
