Though neither the reader nor the narrator is sure of the Memory Police's intentions when they first arrive at the narrator's home, it quickly becomes clear that they are there to collect anything of her late father's that refers to birds. Birds have recently been disappeared from the island and the narrator's father was employed throughout his life as an ornithologist.
