Nobu and Sayuri's relationship IS NOT based on love.

I think Nobu does love Sayuri. He spends much of the novel trying to get Sayuri to become his personal geisha. While Sayuri admires some of Nobu's qualities, she loves his business partner, Chairman Ken Iwamura for his kindness.
