What causes the breakdown of Melanctha's relationship with Jem Richards in the story, Melanctha?

Jem Richards and Melanctha get engaged after her relationship with Jeff ends. Their relationship, however, sours when Jem hots a streak of bad luck, and Melanctha fails to respect his consequent need not to be pressured.
