The year is 1980 and the narrator is an American anthropology graduate student who has spent 18 months in the bush of Africa in search of the ever elusive thesis data. Disillusioned and exhausted, she returns to Gaborone where she finds socioeconomic project trailblazer Nelson Denoon. Denoon has founded a village in the Kalahari entirely ran by females who normally have no power in African society and amidst this secretive utopian society the narrator and Denoon find a love that will forever change her life.
