Why does Cassia resist taking her green pills?

As Cassia tries to come to terms with all that happened throughout the day, she thinks about the pills. The green pills calm people down, and she is allowed one a week. Cassia has never taken it, mostly because Grandfather encouraged her to face things in life without it.
