Initially, Aunty Jean is portrayed as bossy, judgmental, negative, nosy, and controlling. Later in the narrative, after Martyn has gone to live with her, she is portrayed as having more compassion than Martyn initially believed, but also as being a drunk like Dad, albeit a less violent and dangerous one.
