According to Frankl, some prisoners found that nobody awaited them, and that the image of freedom they had in their mind for years did not compare to their reality. Many also felt bitter about the lack of concern of outsiders ("whose superficiality and lack of feeling was so disgusting that one finally felt like creeping into a hole and neither hearing nor seeing human beings anymore"), and many were not prepared to deal with unhappiness.
