Frankl writes that because of the harsh realities of camp life and the "constant necessity of concentrating on the task of staying alive," some of the prisoners "regressed" to a more primitive form of mental life. How does he see this manifest itself?

Frankl writes that the "wishes and desires" of those who "regressed" manifested themselves in dreams. "What did the prisoner dream about most frequently? Of bread, cake, cigarettes, and nice warm baths. The lack of having these simple desires led him to seek wish-fulfillment in dreams." Prisoners also spoke often of their favorite foods, a kind of conversation that Frankl himself saw as dangerous.
