The inadequate diet left prisoners skeletal and left them with no defenses. Frankl writes that once the body was left without resistance, "each one of us could calculate with fair accuracy whose turn would be next, and when his own would come. After many ovservations we knew the symptoms well, which made the correctness of our prognoses quite certain."
