Why does Madeleine get upset when she is compared to the Abbott who tortured Saint Michel?

Madeleine gets upset because she wants to be like Saint Michel, not like the Abbott. She pictures herself playing the role of a saint. She doesn't like thinking that punishing M. Pujol is helping him in any way.
