Why does Madeleine gather gravel to drop on top of M. Pujol's caravan?

Madeleine gathers gravel so that she can drop it on top of M. Pujol's caravan. She does this because she says that the sound of rain helps her sleep. By emulating the sound of rain, she is hoping to help M. Pujol sleep.
