I think that the dramatic purpose of the dagger soliloquy serves to illustrate Macbeth’s deep apprehensions over killing Duncan. Macbeth has some pretty deep regrets and guilt going into this. His intense stress can be seen in his "heat oppressed brain" and the illusion of a bloody dagger leading him to Duncan's chambers.
