Levee is the talented, temperamental trumpet player. He is in his early thirties and the youngest member of the band. He serves as a foil to Ma Rainey becuase he represents everything that is contrary to her belief system. He serves as a symbol of a new phase of music that will render her own extinct. In addition, Ma Rainey is demanding and disciplined, whereas, Levee is unruly and undisciplined.
