Song sees the story as ridiculous. She believes it is an imperialist's fantasy to show the Asian submissive to the dominant white man. Gallimard sees it from a more romantic perspective; simply as a woman who loves a man unconditionally. Gallimard loves the idea of a woman who will devote herself to her man no matter how unworthy he is.
