How does the author use foreshadowing in Lust?

In City Nights, Ellen's naive approach to engaging with Nicholas is foreshadowed by three events. Her friend Tina warns her to be careful; Nicholas' friend, Theo, tells her that he is promiscuous; Ellen hears a conversation, during which, Nicholas recalls a previous lover's name.
