A lot of major events happen in this book. At the beginning of Part 2, John remembered the night the soldiers came to his village. In the summer of 1987, he was trying to sleep on the floor of a hut with about a dozen boys and girls. The soldiers had bombed other villages, and refugees moved south, coming through John's village. He heard explosions near the village and realized that his own village was getting attacked. He and the other children tried to escape, and mothers were calling out for their children. Everyone was running around in panic.
