The secluded tropical island becomes a microcosm of the world for Goldng's social experiment. The children find themselves on a deserted island in the middle of the pacific ocean after their pilot shot their passenger pod onto the island as he was being attacked. The island provides plentiful fruit and meat for the children, but there are some fears that it also harbors. Are these dangers real or are they merely manifestations of their own fears and insecurities? Golding is able to use the island as a metaphor for man's essential illness.
