Why does Hornblower kill Nathaniel Sweet in the novel, Lord Hornblower?

Hornblower kills Nathaniel Sweet because Sweet leads the crew to mutiny, and thus, he cannot be allowed to escape. Sweet's death sets an example to the rest of the sailors.
