Reynolds explores the double meaning of “beef,” as both in relation to meat in the literal sense and related to interpersonal disputes when people have unresolved conflicts with one another (27). Will’s anxiety immediately following Shawn’s death makes him feel like “something invisible [is] trying to eat” him (26). He equates this psychological sensation to the physical discomfort and chafing his mother experiences when her eczema flares up. He then relates the feeling of being eaten to the idea that people are like meat. This evokes a sense of helplessness within the world.
